Dandruff

Dandruff is basically dead skin that has shed from the scalp. Skin naturally dies and flakes off however in some instances dandruff can be excessive due to recurring conditions or trigger such as stress, trauma, change of diet, change of shampoo etc. Dandruff may be associated by itching and redness.

Most dandruff can be treated with specialised shampoos or medications however in extreme cases the cause may be related (confirm with GP) to:

  • seborrhoeic dermatitis

  • psoriasis

  • fungal infection

  • head lice

  • stress

Simple dandruff occurs in many people worldwide with the driver for many treatments being social reasons - unwanted white flakes on clothes etc. Hair loss hasn't been associated with simple dandruff and many people find the dandruff is reduced by keeping hair at short length.

Some of the natural treatments people have used are washing with tea tree oil, rubbing alcohol, apple cider vinegar which allegedly helps destroy the bacteria that causes Dandruff, diet improvements with a focus on reduction of saturated fats, dietary flaxseed oil, aromatherapy and head massage with essential oils and homeopathic remedies such as Sulphur, Sepia and Oleander.
