Arthritis

Arthritis, meaning joint inflammation, is a condition where damage is caused to the joints of the body resulting in pain and reduced movement. It is one of the most common ailments amongst people of 60 years of age. There are numerous types of arthritis:

  • Autoimmune forms such as Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis

  • Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection.

  • Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint that results in subsequent inflammation. A less common form called pseudogout.

  • Osteoarthritis (very common) is known as degenerative joint disease and occurs following trauma to the joint, following an infection of the joint or simply as a result of aging.

The main symptoms sufferer need to deal with is pain and reduced mobility. Blood tests and X-rays of the affected joints are often performed to confirm the diagnosis including screening blood tests if certain arthritis is suspected. This may include rheumatoid factor, antinuclear factor (ANF), extractable nuclear antigen and specific antibodies.

Treatment varies depending on the type of arthritis and may include physical and occupational therapy, medications and arthroplasty (joint replacement) may be required in eroding forms of arthritis. Natural forms of treatment focus on diet and mild exercise however, proof is empirical.

Diets low in protein, no milk or milk products, no polyunsaturated oils, an increase in omega3, fatty acids, walnuts and flaxseeds have shown benefit with some people including the use of Vitamin C, the herb Guggul and spice Tumeric which is said to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Other natural items people use are:
Cat's Claw, Devil's Claw, Yucca, Aloe Vera, Celery Seed, Ginger, Chlorella, Spirulina (micro-algae), Glucosamine, Seatone, Essential Oils in massage. As with any form of supplements that are taken or variation to exercise your GP should be consulted to ensure no potential side effects are experienced especially if you are pregnant or suffering from other health ailments unrelated to arthritis.
